Audio Interviews—Alternate Perceptions Magazine, July 2021
Hosted by Brent Raynes
Rick Hilberg attended his first UFO meeting back in December 1958, after which he became immediately mesmerized and intrigued by the “flying saucer” mystery. He soon joined several small UFO groups and eventually edited and published his own newsletter in 1962 entitled UFO Magazine. It had a reputation as one of the best in the field during the 1960s, carrying articles by many leading ufologists of that time. By 1970 Hilberg sold his interests in that publication to Allan Manak and Ron Pelger of the Flying Saucer Digest, joining the staff of that zine as an associate editor. In 1990 he became a co-editor when its long-time editor Robert S. Easley vacated that position. Then in 1999, with the untimely death of its founding editor Allan Manak, Hilberg took over editorship of the publication.
Rick also published several other newsletters over the years including UFO Magazine News Bulletin and Weirdology. Back in 1964, he became one of the founders of the Congress of Scientific Ufologists (which later became the National UFO Conference). Today it’s considered one of the first serious attempts to hold annual conventions that stressed rational and objective UFO claims and theories.
Rick has served as a board member of MUFON of Ohio, serves as a UFO historian [notice his many continuing features here in Alternate Perceptions] and in 2015 received the first MUFON of Ohio Lifetime Achievement award.
Allen H. Greenfield of Atlanta, Georgia is a long-time UFOlogist, occultist, author, and a bishop of the Gnostic Catholic Church. He received the “UFOlogist of the Year Award” from the National UFO Conference back in 1972 and 1992. I still have an autographed copy of his Saucers and Saucerers after meeting him at a UFO conference in Ohio. In our interview, I confess how he influenced my vision of Alternate Perceptions. Give us a listen!
