UFO Contactees and Mediumship?

by: Brent Raynes

Drawing by woman in Kentucky of her UFO encounter

“Researchers like John Keel and Jacques Vallee have detailed the connections between UFOs, fairy tales, the demonic, and the psychic realms, and parapsychologist D. Scott Rogo theorized that UFOs were collective poltergeists,” wrote Michael Grosso, Ph.D. (1) “UFO craft and occupants behave like mind-matter hybrids and remain maddeningly elusive and surreal, more like the antics of ghosts than machines from outer space. We hear of levitation, telepathy, apports, teleportation, strange light and heat phenomena, and materialization effects. …UFOs and aliens, like ghosts and apparitions, behave as if they were not subject to normal physical constraints.”

Keel once expressed how ufology should be a branch of parapsychology. In his book Strange Creatures from Time and Space, published in 1970, Keel even wrote: “Are ghosts really UFOs and UFO entities, or are UFOs really ghosts? Take your choice.” Numerous close encounters and contact episodes are loaded with parapsychological data. It’s an enormous challenge to provide a hard scientific context and model that will accommodate all of the very peculiar qualities and characteristics associated with experiencer descriptions detailed in so very many of these extraordinary accounts.

Keel reported discovering, for example, how the presumed intelligence associated with UFOs demonstrated how it could at times accurately foresee the future. He even compared experiencer abilities to mediumship, like the time he hypnotized a woman he called Jane on Long Island in 1967 who was having a bizarre series of experiences and how when he hypnotized her a strange personality calling itself something like “Apol” came through and accurately predicted some plane crashes. “I was slowly convincing myself that the entities were somehow tuned to the future,” Keel wrote in The Mothman Prophecies (1975). “I was making other startling discoveries. I had only to think of a serious question and my phone would ring and Jane would deliver a message from Apol answering it.”

“It is noteworthy that the predictions allegedly relayed to ‘silent contactees’ by the UFO occupants are identical in phrasing and content to the messages being received by trance mediums and even by Ouija board operators,” Keel reported. (2) “Many specific ‘code’ phrases are used again and again in these contacts. Phrases such as ‘We are one’ and ‘See you in time.’ The former phrase is also well-known to the occultists.”

Back in 1989, I heard from a 49-year-old Kentucky housewife named Martha who claimed she had had some very unusual experiences. She described herself as happily married, with six children, and how she lived on a large farm where they at one time had as many as 10,000 hogs and milked 125 cows.

Martha however had an extraordinary secret that few knew outside her large family. “When I was five or six years old, I was playing in a field behind our house,” she wrote. “It was in the late afternoon I’m sure. I heard something…He looked very tall to me (I was always small. Still am. I am only 5-foot tall). So I think now he was about six feet tall. He was in a one-piece suit I think. It makes me think of a jumpsuit. It was white and shiny. He wore a belt. It was silver. He told me not to be afraid, that he was there to see if I was all right. I had been sick for about 2 or 3 weeks about a month before.”

“He took a shiny, silver colored tool, as I called it at the time, from the belt, and told me to hold it. It was about the size of a pencil, a little longer. He held a little box in his hand and watched it as I held the ‘tool.’ He told me I would be okay, and to read a lot and learn all I could and he would see me again someday.”

“After this happened, I learned to read on my own. I also could tell my mother and dad when something was about to happen. After I told them two or three things and they happened, mother and dad made me stop telling things.”

Years later, one night in November 1975, Martha and her family had a UFO close encounter. “It was just above the treetops. It was a very large, saucer-shaped craft. There were lights all around the outside, and a very bright one under it. The front dome was glass-like. I could see inside. They looked like me and you. It stayed put for a while. The light shined on us standing below. Then it began to move up and to the east, and was just a tiny speck in no time.” “I guess it was about a week or two after (that) I saw a man in my house. There was the outline of a man at the basement door. I searched the house. No one was there. …My dad was in the hospital about 50 miles away and I visited him 2 or 3 times a week, so I put this down as just being tired. A few days later, at 3 a.m., something woke me, a noise of some kind. I looked up and a man was standing in my bedroom door. There was a floodlight on each side of the house and I could see him real good. He walked toward me and sat on my bed. He told me to take care of my mother and sister, that my dad was dead. Twenty minutes later the hospital called. Dad had died.”

“Everyone I know has changed over the years, but I’m sure this was the same man I have seen since I was a little girl. He hadn’t changed. He looked just the same as the first time I saw him.”

“It was shaped like a disk about the size of a boxcar, with a domed top and with square red and green windows,” Mrs. Rita Malley stated. “And it made a humming sound, something like the vibration of a television antenna in the wind.”

It was about 7 p.m., December 12, 1967. Mrs. Malley was driving on Route 34 outside of Ithaca, New York, with her 5-year-old son in the backseat, when the incident occurred. The object was just over the power lines along the side of the road. Suddenly she realized that she no longer had control of her automobile. As she frantically tried to regain control of her car, she noticed her son in the back sat motionless, as though in “some kind of a trance.” The car moved over to the shoulder of the road and over an embankment, stopping in an alfalfa field. There was a “white twirling beam of light” that shined down from the object, the humming sound, and then she began to hear “voices.”

“They didn’t sound like male or female voices, but were weird, the words broken and jerky, like the way a translator sounds when he is repeating a speech at the United Nations. But it was like a weird chorus of several voices.”

“The voices named someone I knew and said that at that moment my friend was involved in a terrible accident miles away. They said my son would not remember any of this. Then the car began to move again, although still not under my control. We came up out of that field and over the ditch as if it were nothing, and then back onto the road.”

She then regained control of her car and sped home. The next day she learned that her friend had indeed, just the night before, been involved in a serious auto accident!

Are these kinds of UFO encounter events what we would expect from extraterrestrial visitors coming to our world and interacting with us by providing “psychic readings”? It definitely sounds like the messages that you’d expect from a psychic medium but not a visiting spaceman from another planet. The high-strangeness scenarios don’t end here. Keel even reported on another weird anomalistic gem, that a few other researchers came to take notice of over time too, when he wrote: “A New York psychiatrist once asked me if I’d ever heard of deceased people appearing in flying saucers. He told me how a young patient, a teenaged boy, claimed to have witnessed a UFO landing and was astonished to see his late father emerge from the object. The psychiatrist knew nothing of UFOs and assumed the whole thing was nothing but a childish fantasy. Actually, however, there have been hundreds of similar reports although they are usually ignored by the hardcore believers in extraterrestrial spaceships.” (3)
