More Than A Mood

By: Stan Prachniak, MBA

Every day, people encounter situations that can stir up a wide range of emotions. Whether it is frustration, disappointment, excitement, or joy, these feelings often influence the mood we carry throughout the day. While moods are a natural response to our experiences, many people allow them to dictate how they react to challenges, conversations, and decisions. It is important to remember that a mood is not the same as a choice.

At a basic level, our moods originate from our feelings but our feelings do not define who we are. Feeling angry does not make someone an angry person, just as feeling discouraged does not make someone a failure. Emotions provide us with valuable information about what we are experiencing, but they should not become the sole guide for our actions. Recognizing the difference between what we feel and how we respond is a key part of emotional maturity and personal growth.

At times, it can seem impossible to shake a bad mood. Everyone experiences moments when they feel stuck in a negative mindset or trapped in a “funk.” During these moments, it is easy to react impulsively, speak harshly, or withdraw from others. Yet these are the times when self-awareness matters most. By acknowledging our feelings without surrendering to them, we create space to make thoughtful choices rather than emotional reactions.

Learning to adapt to our moods instead of simply reacting to them is an important step toward personal growth. We may not always have control over the circumstances we face, but we do have control over how we respond to those given situations. When we consistently allow our moods to determine our actions, we surrender our ability to influence the situation in a more positive way. Choosing how we respond, even in difficult moments, helps us maintain control over what we can change.

Ultimately, we are more than our moods. Emotions will come and go, but our character is revealed through the choices we make despite our mood. By recognizing our feelings, understanding the impact they can have on us and others, and responding intentionally, we can navigate life's challenges with greater wisdom and confidence. A mood may affect the moment, but it does not have to define the person.
