A man in his sixties named Michael heard his name being called as he dozed in his bed at his cousin’s house on Gwenfron Road, Kensington. He sat up in bed, glanced at the window, and saw something looking in with a grin which shocked him to his marrow; it was an entity he had last seen near Kensington bowling green when he aged 10 in 1964 – a being he believed to be a leprechaun. Although he was shocked and a little wary of the entity, Michael also felt a bit nostalgic towards it, and he whispered, “You remember me,” and then Michael’s cousin came into the room, saying, “Who’s shouting at you at this hour?” And his cousin saw the thing at the window, and swore in fright, and then it was gone. Michael had tears in his eyes and could not really say why. He said to his cousin, “I didn’t imagine it, did I? You saw it, didn’t you?” His cousin swore again and said, “Course I saw it – what the hell was it?”

“An old childhood friend,” said Michael, choked up. He hasn’t seen it since, but he and so many other kids saw those entities across Kensington in the summer of 1964, and the little folk were seen in other parts of the city too, from Toxteth to Kirkby, and the adults did their best to dismiss the entities as mere products of mass hysteria – but the kids knew the truth and were more open-minded. The leprechauns might return one day.

A 19 year old girl named Kelly was walking with her boyfriend Tim on the Liverpool Uni Campus not far from the Augustus John pub when the young couple heard an eerie voice shouting out what sounded like “Kay-reen” – and Tim said, “Its coming from over there, look,” and he pointed with his free hand to an alleyway between two buildings. Kelly squeezed Tim’s other hand and said, “Let’s go, this is creeping me out,” but Tim could see light flickering between those two buildings and the voice was sounding more frantic so he gently pulled his girlfriend to see what was making the noise, and the couple saw a little figure which looked female with some type of ‘antennae’ protruding from its head. The figure was glowing blue and flickering and was about 2 feet high. “Kay Reen, It’s me!” said the figure, and Tim said, “Oh My God, I’ve got to take a video of this,” and he let go of Kelly’s hand and fumbled for his iPhone, but the entity vanished. Kelly started to cry, and Tim asked, “What’s wrong?” Kelly said she remembered seeing that little being when she was a child. She had forgotten all about it. She then made a confession – her first name was Caireann (pronounced Kay-reen) but she went by her second name – Kelly – because she thought Caireann sounded “odd.” Tim said he loved that name – Irish for “little beloved” and so Kelly went under that name from then on. What that glowing being was from Caireann’s childhood is unknown, and what it was doing in the vicinity of that Uni campus that night is another mystery. Source: Tom Slemen, 2023
