What Are You Waiting For?

By Stan Prachniak, MBA

Many people have a difficult time bringing thoughts and desires out of their minds and into reality. There are countless people who are “stuck” in life—waiting for the right time or situation to take action. They can’t seem to leave a job or relationship that they are unhappy in, or take the first steps toward a goal that they’d like to accomplish because the perfect scenario hasn’t presented itself. There is always some reason they have that “justifies” their belief. It’s easy to slip into the mindset of focusing on potential obstacles that will hinder their path and why they believe something can’t be done. This type of thinking will usually never lead to the desired outcome.

When the focus is mainly on reasons something can’t be done, failure becomes a probability. In an earlier article, I spoke about turning “can’t” into “how can I?” The same principle applies here. You may have the desire to own your own business, but all you can think about are the things that can keep you from achieving that goal. Maybe you are already working 60 hours a week, have a family to take care of, or any number of other commitments that you believe are keeping you from making this goal a reality. For example, let’s say you have a desire to start your own business, but you have beliefs about why you can’t do it. Can you challenge these beliefs and think about how you can make it happen?

There is a good chance that you have formulated some sort of plan, either in writing or in your head, for how you can achieve your goal. You have an “ideal” way that you’d like for things to happen. The truth is that not many things in life are ideal. If you really want to reach your goal, then you must be willing to adjust and accept that you need to change what you believe is the only way to reach your goal. You have been frozen because of your focus on why you can’t do it.

There are 168 hours in a week. If you are working for 60 hours and sleeping for the recommended 56 hours, then there are 52 hours that you have for other things in your life. What are you doing with this time? Is there something you could spend less time doing in order to pursue your goal? If you truly do want to accomplish your goal, then cutting some things down (our even completely out) should not be a problem for you. Maybe you spend several hours each day/night mindlessly scrolling or binge-watching your new favorite show. You have the power to decide if that show or those reels are more important to you that achieving your goal. But it’s important to understand that there are likely several hours each week that you can choose to dedicate to pursuing your goal. It may be uncomfortable to change your routine, but it is a way to begin making your dream a reality. What are you waiting for?
