One early morning on Slater Street, three girls – all in their twenties – were heading for a pizzeria when one of them stopped her other two friends and could hardly get her words out because she was gripped with uncontrollable laughter. Her name was Joely, and she said, ‘Some fella just swiped my vape!’ The ‘fella Joely pointed to was someone ‘dressed’ up as an archetypal alien, and he was puffing away on Joely’s vape. The girl’s two friends were then also struck with what they could only later describe as an inability to talk because they went into hysterics of laughter. Then they saw the figure with the vape slowly fade away until only a cloud of exhaled smoke was hanging in the air, and the three girls stopped laughing. A young man standing nearby walked to the spot where the ‘alien’ had been standing and waved his hand – as if he were seeing if the thing was still there. Another girl came on the scene with an open mouth and an expression of utter astonishment, and she looked at the spot where the figure had been, and then she looked at Joely and her friends.
None of the girls had taken any drugs, but had been drinking of course, but not that much and the incident had been witnessed by other people, including a man who had been looking out the window of the pizzeria. He said he had seen the ‘alien’ earlier in the area and had assumed it was someone in a realistic type of fancy dress costume.
